7 Places to Visit in a Weekend in Cabo Rojo

For those interested in spending a relaxing weekend, full of ecotourism adventures, and good gastronomy, these seven places will give you the opportunity to plan for an unforgettable experience and many things to do in Cabo Rojo. With its breathtaking beaches, wildlife refuges, museums, and historical and cultural attractions, along with over 100 restaurants, this city offers access to world-class wonders.

1) Los Morrillos Lighthouse, La Playuela and the Salt Flats

Los Morrillos Lighthouse, La Playuela, and the Salt Flats (Las Salinas) are near the end of Road 301. Los Morrillos Lighthouse is one of the most photographed spots in Puerto Rico; La Playuela has been listed among the 25 best beaches in the world, and Las Salinas is the oldest industry in the Americas, with approximately 512 years of continuous operation.

2) National Wildlife Refuge and Cartagena Lagoon

For those who like hiking, mountain biking, and photography, we recommend a hike or morning run through the National Wildlife Refuge, home to 129 species of local and migratory birds, or by the Cartagena Lagoon. Both areas are set up for outdoor activities and lots of spectacular photos.

3) A Religious and Cultural Route

Several important attractions of the Porta del Sol Religious Route combine the history and culture of the region, attracting thousands of tourists to the area annually. Among these are the Parish of St. Michael the Archangel, and the Schoenstatt Shrine in Cabo Rojo; the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Monserrate in Hormigueros; and in San Germán there are the Porta Coeli Museum, the Parish of San Germán de Auxerre, the Hermitage of San Sebastián, and the Chapel of the Inter-American University.

4) The Proceres Museum

The Proceres Museum was inaugurated in 1995 and its building structure is very similar to the Lodge Cuna de Betances, and its Rotunda reminds us of the Los Morrillos Lighthouse. It has 7 permanent exhibition halls and 2 temporary exhibition halls, which include exhibitions dedicated to the life and work of our illustrious men and women, indigenous culture, and artists from Cabo Rojo. In addition, there are artworks by Antonio Martorell, Augusto Marín, Lorenzo Omar, John Balossi, Fernando Santiago, Hiram Palermo and Sixto Febus, among others.

5) Over 100 Restaurants

Cabo Rojo has over 100 nice restaurants to accommodate all tastes and budgets. Among the most recommended are Santos, Xabores Cyber Café, Terramar, Pika-Pika, Buena Vibra, Costa Brava, Dylan’s, Cayo Azul, and Hoy Como Ayer.

6) Excelsior Cinema – Theatre

The Excelsior Theatre was founded in 1871 by Salvador Brau y Ascencio and is in front of the City Hall. In 2016, it was reopened as a cinema where the films of the moment are shown, with a capacity for 159 people, and the most modern projection and audio technology from Sony, making it one of the best movie theaters on the island.

7) Combate Beach Resort

Every getaway starts with choosing a central, suitable, and safe place to stay. Combate Beach Resort is the most awarded small inn in Puerto Rico and has over 30 attractions around it. Located in front of El Combate Beach, it has 44 elegant rooms, a swimming pool, sand volleyball and basketball courts, a gazebo with a pool table and domino tables, a breakfast restaurant, a gift shop, and dozens of areas for that special photo you are looking for.

We hope these 7 recommendations will help you plan your next getaway to Cabo Rojo, the Capital of Domestic Tourism.  We look forward to seeing you!
